The expert jury at the Montalcinese producer consortium gave it the highest rating five stars. Sangiovese, the sole basis for the Brunello, is also a grape variety which responds exceptionally well to individual vintages and diff erent terroirs. A variety of soils, locations, climatic conditions and winemaker philosophies ensure a wide array of styles, ranging from full-bodied unadulterated wines and fruity interpretations of the grape through to elegant classics. Wine lovers are very much spoiled by the 2010 and 2012 vintages. Solid vintages such as the Brunello 2011 annata can also be added to this list. This is precisely why Montalcino and its Brunello are in great demand worldwide. This is evident not only from the top ratings from American wine critics, but, pleasingly, also due to the sales figures: 9,5 million bottles were produced and sold worldwide of the exceptional 2010 vintage. As Patrizio Cencioni, the new president of the producer consortium, explains, marketing and promotion of Montalcino wines are thus highly important on both old and new markets. That s precisely why such activities are to be increased over the next few months and years.
